Urban Mountain Challenge is an individually timed event where climbers will be competing against the clock for fastest time. Proceeds from the event will benefit UK College of Communications and Downtown Lexington Corporation Foundation.
On January 28th you are invited to climb to the top of the Lexington Financial Center (big blue building) at 250 West Main Street in Lexington, Kentucky. Once you reach the top, look out at the breathtaking panoramic view of downtown Lexington. Then enjoy a celebration with food, drinks and entertainment at the Survivors’ Party outside of the Lexington Financial Center!
Individuals 13 years old and older are welcome to participate. All minors under the age of 18 must provide a signature from a parent or guardian upon registration. There is a discounted fee for public safety officials (firefighters, police, and military).
Individual Fee: $45
Public Safety Officials: $30 (police, firefighters, military)
Public Safety Officials must show proof in identification on race day.
Every registered participant will receive a long sleeve t-shirt with their race packet.
Special discount codes are available for high school and college students and Urban Active members. Please call Tamara Deckard at 859-425-2592 for high school and college codes and contact your Lexington Urban Active gym for the member discount. Proof of student status will be required to pick up your race packet.

There will be four (4) bailout points along the course that offer water, restrooms, medics, and the opportunity to bail out and take the elevator back down to the lobby. Bailout points are located on the 7th, 12th, 19th and 25th floors. There will also be water and medics at the finish on the 30th floor.
Lexington Financial Center’s stairwells turn to the right. While climbing, please pass on the outside only and let the person ahead of you know you are about to pass them. Upon completion of the race, climbers will take the elevators back to the main lobby or to the 2nd floor where Level 2 USA Triathlon Certified Coach Beth Atnip of Swim Bike Run of Kentucky will be leading stretches and warm down drills.
Only participants, staff and volunteers are permitted in the stairwells. The carrying of any objects is strictly prohibited in the stairwell including but not limited to the following:
- iPods or music devices
- Water bottles
- Children
- Water belts with removable bottles
- Keys, cell phones, PDAs
- Cameras (Video or still)
A bag and coat check will be located in the lobby. Please leave your personal belongings at the bag check or with a family member or friend who is not participating in the climb.
Packet Pick Up Dates and Locations

If you cannot attend packet pick-up at Swim Bike Run of Kentucky or DLC, you may pick up your packet on event day at the Check-in table; however, it will be your responsibility to check our website for your designated individual start time.
What to Expect on Event Day
Based on your climbing experience level and estimated 5K time, you will be given a seeded starting time in the Urban Mountain Challenge. Our first participants will climb beginning at 8:00am sharp with a new climber following every 15 seconds. We will notify you of your seeded start time at packet pick-up and via our website on race week. We ask that you arrive at Lexington Financial Center 45 minutes in advance of your designated start time on race morning. We expect start times running between 8:00am and 10:00am. If you were not able to pick up your race packet during the designated times, you will need to sign in at the Check-in table.
When you reach the top, you will have the opportunity to rest, drink water, use the restroom, and enjoy the panoramic view of Downtown Lexington. When you’re ready, you will take the elevator back down to the 2nd floor for stretching or to the lobby.
If you arrive late and miss your designated start time, you will be assigned to the final start time.
Awards Ceremony/Age Groups
The awards ceremony will take place as soon as the last heat finishes in the heated Survivors’ Party tent outside of the Lexington Financial Center on Main Street. Awards will be presented to the Fastest Male and Female overall, Fastest Male and Female Public Safety Official, and Fastest Male and Female in each age group. Age group categories will be as follows: 13-17, 18-25, 26-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56-65, 66-75, and 76+.
