2010 World Equestrian Games

The First Equestrian World Games were held in 1990 and in 2010 it will take place in Lexington, Kentucky. The dates for the World Equestrian Games are September 25 - October 10, 2010. The games include show jumping, dressage, eventing, and the non-Olympic disciplines of driving, vaulting and endurance. This will be an eventful time as the games bring together over 900 of some the best horses, riders and drivers in the world. The Equestrian games are held every two years prior to the Olympic Games, and are governed by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI). The FEI is the international governing body of equestrian sports which establishes rules and regulations for the conduct of international equestrian events. There are games throughout the day to watch, food to taste, even volunteer opportunities to participate in!

In the FEI World Equestrian Games there are 7 main events which draw large crowds. The show jumping is a challenge with 10-13 obstacles to jump over. Dressage consists of the highest level of gaits and is sometimes called the horse ballet. Eventing consists of three contests: the show jumping, dressage, and endurance. Driving is a team of four horses who complete two days of contests. Vaulting requires teamwork from both the vaulter and the horse as they move around the longeur, the person in the middle controlling the horse on a rope. Endurance is a 160 kilometer race which is to be done in the fastest time possible. Reining is an event to show the athletic ability of a ranch-type horse. Para-Equestrian is for dressage riders with disabilities, this will be the first time that para-equestrian competition will be held during the Games.
